Wire ropes consist of several strands of metal wire twisted into a helix forming composite rope. There are varying diameters of rope, whereby a larger diameter is known as a cable laid rope. The term wire rope generally refers to a diameter that is larger that 3/8 inch. Steel is the main material that is used to create a wire rope, though traditionally it was always made with iron, having evolved from wrought iron chains. A fault in a chain may cause catastrophe, whereas if one string of a wire rope breaks there are still several strings that remain integral, meaning the rope will compensate for minor failures where a chain won't.
