Washing machines and dryers are integral parts of the laundry process. A washing machine is charged with the cleaning of clothes and other textiles, whilst the dryer applies heat to dry the fabrics. A washing machine consists of a filling drum at the front, for fabrics to be loaded into. A detergent is then added, which can be purchased in liquid or powder form. Washing machines can either be cold or hot water fill, the water is heated to the desired temperature and the detergent dissolves in it. The drum then turns and the clothes are cleaned. Once the cycle is complete the water is drained from the drum and the fabrics are spun. This removes as much residual water as possible. A dryer is similar in appearance to a washing machine, though it requires no detergents to be added. Fabrics are loaded into the drum and the door closed. The drum then turns, with warm air being filtered in to the drum. This action encourages the residual water to evaporate, leaving the clothes dry. A dryer has several options on the front that can be applied to the drying process, including time, temperature and options for the type of fabric contained within the dryer. This stops clothing from becoming damaged or shrinking.
