Transmission refers to the controlled application of power within the power transmission system. Often this term refers to the gearbox which uses gears and gear trains to provide speed and torque conversions from a rotating power source to another device. In Britain, the term transmission usually refers to the whole drive train including the clutch, gearbox, prop shaft, differential and final drive shaft, whereas in America the term refers more specifically to the gearbox alone. In a motor vehicle the transmission will often adapt the output of the internal combustion engine to the drive wheels.
