Teleconferencing is the process of holding a meeting or discussion remotely. Generally, this involves a number of computers at different locations, but connected by telecommunications technology. The term includes simple audio (phone) conference calls and video conferencing involving three or more participants, but may also include additional facilities, such as virtual whiteboards, polling systems and screen sharing. A teleconference may also involve telepresence, in which robotics, projection technologies and other techniques give the appearance of a person being physically present in a room.

Telecommuting involves working from home or from another remote location rather than commuting to a central office. With the growth of mobile communications, it has grown increasingly simple to work remotely via WiFi or other technologies from laptops, desktops, smartphones and mobile devices. Approximately 1 in 5 workers around the globe, particularly employees in the Middle East, Latin America and Asia, telecommute frequently and nearly 10% work from home every day. In the 2000s, annual leave or vacation in some organisations was seen as absence from the workplace rather than ceasing work and some office employees used telework to continue to check work emails while on vacation.
