Soundproofing materials are used to reduce the sound levels that escape from a room or building. There are several approaches to this, including: increasing the distance between source and receiver, using noise barriers to reflect or absorb the energy of sound waves, using dampening structures or using antinoise generators. There are two types of absorbers when it comes to soundproofing, porous absorbers and resonant absorbers. Porous absorbers are often pen cell rubber foam or melamine sponges which absorb noise by friction. They perform best with medium-high frequency sound waves. Resonant panels work by dampening a sound wave as they reflect it. Resonant absorbers are most effective with low-medium frequencies.
