Shafts are a circular, rotating element within a machine which is used to transmit power from one part to another, or from a power producing machine to one that absorbs power. There are various mounts and pulleys that can be mounted on the shaft that have additional tasks within the machine. Generally, shafts are made from mild steel. Where high strength is required and allow steel such as nickel, nickel-chromium or chromium-vanadium steel is used. They are generally formed by hot rolling the metal and finished by cold drawing or turning and gaining the shaft to the correct length and width.
