RIBs, RHIBs and Inflatable Boats. A RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) and a RHIB (Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat) are lightweight but high-performance and high-capacity boats constructed with a solid, shaped hull and flexible tubes at the gunwale. They are used in the naval services, but are also used by organisations such as the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institute) and the coastguard. The inflatable collar allows the vessel to maintain buoyancy if a large quantity of water is shipped aboard due to bad sea conditions. RIBs are commonly four to nine meters long, although they can range in length. They are propelled by on for more outboard motor or an inboard motor turning a water jet or stern drive.
