Retaining walls are rigid walls used for supporting soil mass. They are designed to keep soil bound in positions it would not normally stay in, typically a steep slope. They are used where a landscape needs to be shaped severely for engineering or construction works, new builds or hillside farming. Basement walls are a retaining wall as they are used to support the house, but are surrounded by soil. They must be strong to withstand the amount of soil and pressure on the walls and be able to support the weight of the rest of the house. An important consideration in the design and installation of retaining walls is to reduce the tendency of of the retained material to downslope due to gravity. This creates lateral pressure behind the wall.
