Rectifiers are an electrical device that converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). This means that a current that periodically reverses direction will now flow only in one direction. This process is known as rectification as it straightens the direction of the current. Physically, rectifiers take a number of forms, including vacuum tube diodes, mercury-arc valves, stacks of copper and selenium oxide plates, semiconductor diodes, silicon-controlled rectifiers and other silicon based semiconductor switches. Early radio receivers used a 'cats whisker' of fine wire pressing on a lead sulphide to serve as a rectifier.
