Radio is a wireless communications technology based on radio waves and typically used for voice communications, navigation or control signals for remotely operated devices. The first radio-based communications was patented to Guglielmo Marconi in 1894. The term 'radio' is also used, more loosely, to describe any form of audio broadcasting including internet radio. Recorded data is typically stored as a waveform - generally, an EM wave that might determine, for example, the intensity of pixels to be displayed by a TV or the sound to be produced by a loudspeaker. This waveform is transmitted via a radio wave known as a carrier wave. Analogue radio signals typically encode messages using either amplitude modulation (where the signal strength of the carrier wave is varied according to the amplitude of the waveform), frequency modulation (where the frequency of the carrier wave varies in proportion to the amplitude of the waveform) or phase modulation (where the phase of the carrier wave is offset by an amount proportional to the amplitude of the waveform). Various techniques may be employed for efficient digital communications, but at its simplest, the process involves encoding specific discrete sequences of bits as specific tones (this is how a modem works), transmitting these tones via a radio signal and converting them back to bit sequences at their destination. Due to the way in which discrete bits are converted to analogue tones, digital radio systems are typically less susceptible to distortion from low level interference of signal variation.
