Ballistic Shields are protection devices deployed by police and military forces that are designed to stop or deflect bullets fired at their carrier. Ballistic shields will also protect from less serious threats such as thrown items though they are usually used in situations where riot shields would not offer adequate protection. Bullet-resistant materials are also known as ballistic materials or anti-ballistic materials. They are usually rigid, but may also be supple. They may be complex materials such as Kevlar, UHMWPE, Lexan or carbon fibre composite materials, or they may be basic and simple, such as steel and titanium. Personal Safety Devices are usually held by an individual and can be used to draw attention to themselves if harassed by an assailant. An example of these include personal alarms and items such as pepper spray.
