Oils and lubricants are liquid substances used to reduce friction, particularly between moving parts, such as in car engines. Commonly derived from petroleum base oil with various minerals or additives, they can also be made from synthetic hydrocarbons or hydrated brush polymers. Biolubricants are typically made from vegetable oils and traditionally, whale oil. Dry lubricants are also available including PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), which is often used as a non-stick coating for cooking equipment, corrosion-resistant metal alloys applied to bearings or other sliding surfaces, and other inorganic solids. Oil may also be used as a fuel. Other applications include preventing food from sticking to pans, reducing friction in bicycles and machinery and use in biomedical devices, such as artificial joints.
