Approval for the world’s largest offshore wind farm’s been given, thanks to the strength of its developer’s financial pledge.
DONG Energy’s ‘strike’ price, £57.50 per MW-h (Megawatt-hour), sets a new energy supply affordability standard. In the words of Matthew Wright, Dong Energy UK’s managing director, it’s a “breakthrough moment” and “massive step forward” for wind energy in the UK.
The approval clears DONG Energy’s Hornsea Project Two for construction and operation in the North Sea, just under 90 kilometres from land.
Hornsea Project One – another DONG development – is already being built and previously held the biggest offshore wind farm title. That now passes to Project Two, which will be a 1,386-Megawatt construction. Scheduled for completion by the early 2020s, its output could ultimately meet well over one million homes’ domestic energy needs.
"Not only will Hornsea Project Two provide low cost, clean energy to the UK, it will also deliver high quality jobs and another huge boost to the UK supply chain”, says DONG’s Wright. "Long-term and highly-skilled jobs are being created across the North of England and the UK supply chain is going from strength-to-strength."
Second Hornsea Wind Farm
This second Hornsea wind farm will be positioned 89 kilometres off the East Yorkshire coast. Starting in 2022, the farm’s 1,386MW output will produce electricity sufficient for 1.3-million-plus homes. Hornsea Project Two will thereafter be in operation for 25 years. Up to 130 permanent jobs will be supported over that period but no less than 2,000 employment opportunities will be offered while construction’s in progress.
"Successive governments deserve great credit for providing the certainty for continued investment in offshore wind, enabling it to become the thriving renewable industry it is today”, Wright adds. “We're now really seeing the benefits of this commitment to offshore wind and there is still so much more to come. Indeed, it has the potential to play a key part in the realisation of the UK's industrial strategy."
Next for DONG Energy is Hornsea Project Three, for which the consultation process has already been launched.
