Lightweight Efficient Wine Cartons Unveiled

Packaging firm Tetra Pak and wine producer the Greencroft Bottling Company have unveiled a groundbreaking new carton design

A packaging firm and a wine producer have unveiled a groundbreaking new carton design.

Reportedly the first of its kind in the UK, the wine carton's been co-developed by Tetra Pak and the Greencroft Bottling Company and it made its world debut at the London International Wine Fair on 22 May 2012.

In a joint statement, both firms have highlighted how the advent of this product will deliver ‘benefits across the industry.'

Carton-packaged wines currently represent 8.6 per cent of global wine production and they're especially popular in Chile and Argentina. More recently, they've started to make a deep impact in Europe and now the UK's got involved.

The selection of cartons, as opposed to traditional bottles, brings with it several advantages including reduced weight, more effective storage and greater stackability, plus a decreased effect on the environment.

"Using cartons really benefits the environment as well as the wine industry", Tetra Pak UK's retail manager, Ian Williamson, explained in comments quoted by Packaging News. "Not only are our cartons widely recyclable, they are lightweight and space efficient; one million litres of wine packed in Tetra Prisma Aseptic 750ml cartons can save up to 436 tonnes of packaging versus standard glass bottles. This means fewer trucks on the road and much less fuel required."

These lightweight efficient wine cartons are manufactured from paperboard with a low carbon footprint and, according to Tetra Pak, over 1.5bn of its UK-made cartons meet standards set by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

"The Tetra Pak carton is a really credible alternative to the glass bottle", Mark Satchwell - the managing director of Greencroft Bottling Company - added.

"The materials are much lower cost and the final product is extremely space-efficient, meaning more products can be merchandised on-shelf, maximising return per square foot of selling space."
