Natural Gas is a naturally occurring fossil fuel - a mixture of colourless, odourless hydrocarbons primarily consisting of methane. The gas is formed over millions of years from decomposed plant and animal matter exposed to high temperatures and pressures underground. It is typically found in underground rock formations including oil reservoirs and coal beds. Large underground reserves exist in Iran, Russia, Qatar, Turkmenistan and the United States. It can also be obtained as shale gas (sometimes, controversially, extracted by fracking), town gas (made from coal) or extracted from hydrates or permafrosts where it may be trapped in water-based crystals known as methane clathrates. The term is also applied more broadly to include biogas.

Natural gas is a cleaner fuel than oil or coal - whilst natural gas is responsible for a significant (and increasing) level of CO2 emissions, a modern gas burning power station can produce around 45% less CO2 per unit of energy than its coal-burning equivalent. The following organisations supply related products including natural gas, processing equipment, pipelines, transport systems and pollution control technology.
