Minesweepers are small naval warships that are designed to use various mechanisms intended to counter the threat posed by naval mines so that waterways are maintained and kept clear for safe shipping. Historically, the earliest known usage of naval mines date back to the Ming dynasty. Dedicated minesweepers, however, only appear in historical record several centuries later, to the Crimean War. Minesweepers are equipped with mechanical or electrical devices, known as 'sweeps' for disabling mines. The modern minesweeper is designed to reduce the chances of the mine detonating, it is soundproofed to reduce acoustic signature and often constructed using wood, fiver glass or non-ferrous materials.
