Ballistics refer to the mechanics that deal with the launching, flight, behaviour and effects of projectiles such as bullets, unguided bombs, rockets and so on. Weapons are devices that are used to inflict damage or harm. They can be used to gain a strategic, numerical or mental advantage over an adversary or enemy target. Ammunition refers to the material fired, scattered, dropped or detonated from any weapon. It can be both expendable weapons such as bombs and missiles as well as component parts for other weapons, such as bullets and warheads.

Military fuses (or fuze) are the part of an explosive device that initiates function. In common usage, the word fuse is used indiscriminately. However, when being specific the term fuse describes a simple pyrotechnic initiating device, like the chord on a firecracker or a firework. The term fuze is sometimes used when referring to a more sophisticated ignition device that incorporates mechanical and/or electronic components, such as a proximity fuze for an artillery shell, a magnetic or acoustic fuze on a sea mine or an anti-handling device.
