Military GPS Systems (Global Positioning System) are a navigation technology involving a network of satellites orbiting the Earth in well-known orbits. Each beacon (satellite) broadcasts its clock time and position at regular intervals, and the receiver monitors for these broadcasts. By comparing its own clock-time with the broadcast time, the system can calculate its approximate distance from each beacon and given four or more signals, it can pinpoint its own position on the Earths surface. GPS is maintained by the US government and can be used by anyone who has a receiver. Alternative global navigation satellite systems are available including the Russian GLONASS, Europe's Galileo and China's BeiDou BDS.

GPS are an important tool within the military. They are used to assist soldiers to find objectives even in the dark or unfamiliar territory. Weapons systems can also use GPS to track potential ground and air targets before flagging them as hostile. They also assist with the guidance of missiles.
