Mechanical planters are tractor-towed farm machines that carry out high-precision crop-sowing operations. Their introduction and use has eliminated the need for seed planting to be done by hand within the agricultural industry. Pulled along through fields, planters lay down precise seed rows, drawing on their row units to do so. These row units are arranged horizontally across the planter's width and have identical spaces in between them. This regular distribution pattern ensures that the same gap also exists between each seed row. Size-wise, planters range from single-row to 30-plus row machines. Physical markers, carving out lines that tractor operators follow to create the next parallel seed row series, feature on older-generation planters. Newer models replace these markers with modern autosteer and GPS technologies.
