Life jackets are a personal floatation device that should be inflated when a person wearing one falls into water. Many aircraft and boats must have them fitted by law in case of an accident or crash. Life jackets are fitted with two air chambers in case one fails. Some life jackets have a pull cord which causes the jacket to inflate with carbon dioxide. Some have a blow tube with a one way blow system to manually inflate the jacket. Others inflate automatically when they make contact with water. Most jackets have air chambers that cover the breast, shoulders and neck to ensure the flotation allows people to be on their back, not front.
