A laser sight is a small, usually visible-light laser placed on a handgun or rifle and aligned to emit a beam parallel to the barrel. Since a laser beam has low divergence, the laser light appears as a small spot even at long distances; the user places the spot on the desired target and the barrel of the gun is aligned.

Laser rangefinders use a laser beam to determine the distance to an object. The most common form of laser rangefinder operates on the time of flight principle by sending a laser pulse in a narrow beam towards the object and measuring the time taken by the pulse to be reflected off the target and return to the sender. Due to the high speed of light, this technique is not appropriate for high precision sub-millimetre measurements, where triangulation and other techniques are often used. The pulse may be coded to reduce the chance that the rangefinder can be jammed.

Reflex sights are an optical device that allows the user to look through a partially reflecting glass element and see an illuminated projection of an aiming point or some other image superimposed on the field of view. These sights work on the simple optical principle that anything at the focus of a lens or curved mirror will look like it is sitting in front of the viewer at infinity. The reflex sights employ a refractor that enables the viewer to see the infinity image and the field of view at the same time, either by bouncing the image created by lens off a slanted glass plate, or by using a mostly clear curved glass reflector that images the reticle while the viewer at infinity.

Laser designators are a laser light source that is used to designate a target. Laser designators targeting systems, for laser-guided bombs, missiles or precision artillery munitions. When a target is market by a designator, the beam is invisible and does not shine continuously. Instead, a series of coded pulses of laser light are fired.
