Insulation materials are used to form a thermal envelope or a building in order to reduce the amount of heat released into the atmosphere. Insulation may be categorised in many ways: composition, form, structural contribution, functional mode and resistance to heat transfer. Sometimes materials have a thermally reflective surface added to a material to reduce the transfer of heat through radiation as well as conduction. The materials used for insulation go through rigorous consideration, some of these being thermal conductivity, moisture sensitivity, flammability and durability. Some examples of materials used are: fibreglass, spray foam, clothing insulation and urea foam.
