HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Arresting) filters are air filters, which meet rigorous standards for removing a high percentage of particles over a given size. They are used in facilities ranging from cleanrooms and laboratories to hospitals, aircraft, cars and private homes. The US DOE requires removal of at least 99.97% of all particles over 0.3 µm to recognise the term HEPA while the EU defines a number of categories of HEPA filter according to their level of particle retention. These high levels of filtration are important in the pharmaceutical industry for protecting against cross contamination between clean rooms, laboratory staff and the surrounding environment.
