Effluent and Sewage Treatment Plants are charged with the removal of chemicals and hazardous waste from wastewater, then processing and treating it until it is of a clean enough proportion to be reused. Physical, chemical and biological processes are used to remove contaminants and treat wastewater. A by-product of this process is a semi-solid waste or slurry that is known as sewage sludge. This sludge must undergo further treatments before it is released to land or disposed of. A broader term is wastewater treatment, however this refers to industrial wastewater, whereas sewage treatment refers to the wastewater from homes.
