Drug and Alcohol Testing is used by law enforcement and employers to test an individual and assess from the results whether they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. An alcohol test is known as a breathalyser. It is a device that estimates the blood alcohol content from a breath sample. When the user exhales into a breath analyser, any ethanol present in their breath is oxidised to acetic acid. The atmospheric oxygen is reduced and the overall reaction is the oxidation of ethanol to acetic acid and water. The electric current produced by this reaction is measured by a micro controller and displayed as an approximation of overall blood alcohol level by the alcosensor.

A drug test uses a biological specimen to test for drugs, Specimens include items such as urine, hair, blood, breath, sweat and saliva. This will then determine the presence or absence of drugs or their metabolites. Drug tests are routinely carried out on athletes to ensure they are clean.
