Contractors and consultants are both involved when it comes to assisting a client get what he or she wants out of the project they have designed and undertaken. Traditionally, a consultant is a self-employed business person with a set of skills and experience. They are there to offer advice and expertise on a project. Whereas a contractor, whilst also a self-employed business person, is there to evaluate the plans presented and actually carry out the work. They often provide labour and materials to the project and work it to a fixed period of time and price. In recent times the terms have become interchangeable, and in some cases a consultant has signed to say that they will undertake any work that needs to be done, in that case becoming the contractor.
