Optical drop profiling in the pharmaceutical industry a tool for research and QC

These phenomena have become increasingly accessible in recent years due to the advent of automated drop / meniscus profiling. What was formerly measured manually with a simple microscope and eyepiece is now completely automated and computer-controlled.

Automation has brought with it many advantages, the most important being the greatly improved accuracy and operator independence. The technique has also opened the door to the study of time-dependent processes, such as drop spreading, absorption of liquids and evaporation of small drops.

However, these instruments are not limited to measurements of contact angle. They can also measure surface or interfacial tension of liquids.

Drop profiling applications in the pharmaceutical industry include characterisation of absorption of liquid into tableted powders, tablet dissolution, controlled release systems, cleanliness on packaging, surface / interfacial tension of small volumes of liquid formulations and many others. The KSV CAM 200 is an open and modular instrument with optional automatic sample stages and liquid dispensers.

Whatever you want to measure, the long list of optional accessories makes it possible. An innovative new feature is the autopipette dispenser, for disposable pipette tips perfect for sticky or difficult to clean liquids, or in cases where contamination is critical. Not limited to flat surfaces, new meniscus profiling software for the CAM 200 can also determine contact angle and surface tension on fibres and rods.

The plug-and-play instrument features user-friendly software and firewire connection to the PC that disposes with the need for an extra frame grabber in your computer. The automatic sample stages and software makes the instrument perfect for QC/QA applications, freeing up the operator to perform other tasks. Very fast processes can also be studied using high speed cameras.
