Coke fuel is a fuel with very few impurities and a high carbon content, usually made from coal. It is the solid carbonaceous material derived from destructive distillation of low-ash bituminous coal. Cokes made from coal are grey, hard and porous. While coke can be formed naturally it is mostly used in a synthetic form. The form known as pet coke is derived from oil refinery units or cracking processes. Coke is used in the preparation of producer gas which is a mixture of carbon monoxide and nitrogen. Air is passed over red-hot coke in order to produce producer gas.
