Due to the nature of an attack from sea, often boats would have to moor, so the majority of these defences are located close to harbours and ports in order to keep them safe and prevent any attacks that may cut off any supply of food. Sea forts are mostly located on tidal islands to they are either constantly, or partially completely surrounded by the sea and only accessible by boat. Coastal artillery, such as cannons, were situated along the coast as protection. Some are still in location and have become tourist attractions.
