Centrifuges are racks or containers mounted on a spinning axis. Test tubes and other samples placed in a centrifuge undergo high centrifugal forces, which cause the separation of immiscible materials (those that do not form a homogeneous mixture). A common application is the separation (sometimes called fractionation) of blood into blood plasma, platelets and more

Centrifuges are racks or containers mounted on a spinning axis. Test tubes and other samples placed in a centrifuge undergo high centrifugal forces, which cause the separation of immiscible materials (those that do not form a homogeneous mixture). A common application is the separation (sometimes called fractionation) of blood into blood plasma, platelets and leukocytes (white blood cells), and red blood cells. A similar process supports the separation of cellular components for research purposes. Other applications include the removal of large air particles (cyclonic separation), clarification of wine and the removal of fat from skimmed milk.
