Cell phones, or mobile phones in the UK, are portable telephones that can make or receive calls over a network frequency link whilst the user is moving within the telephone service area. Modern mobile services use a cellular network, hence the name cell phone. Modern day cell phones are also fitted with other features such as SMS text messaging, MS, email, internet access, bluetooth, games and digital photography. The internet connection allows the user to access their bank accounts, social media and other important information, allowing them the ability to control everything digital from their mobile hone. These are usually called smartphones.
Mobile - a mobile device is a computing device that is small enough to hold and operate in the hand. Typically, any handheld computer device will have an LCD flatscreen interface, providing a touchscreen interface with digital buttons and keyboard or physical buttons along with a physical keyboard. Many such devices can connect to the internet and interconnect with other devices such as car entertainment systems or headsets via Wi-Fi, bluetooth, cellular networks or near field communication. Integrated cameras, digital media players, the ability to place and receive telephone calls, video games and Global Positioning System (GPS) capabilities are common.
Cellular networks are linked collections of wireless mobile base stations, each containing one or more transceiver (transmitter-receiver). Each base station is responsible for communicating with any mobile telephones or related devices within range of it, in an area known as a cell. Each device within a cell may be assigned a particular frequency range and a schedule for transmitting and receiving information to avoid interference from other devices in the cell. Each device is referenced by unique identifiers, and as a mobile phone (or 'cell phone') is carried from one cell to another, it registers (sometimes mid-call) with the nearest base station, allowing for a smooth 'hand-off' from one cell to the next. Cellular networks are designed so that each cell will have the same size and shape (typically hexagonal). However, each base station has a specific range, frequency bandwidth and data capacity, so network coverage will vary from place to place and from one frequency to another.
