Canning typically provides a shelf life of one to five years though it can be much longer under specific circumstances. A freeze dried product could last for unto 30 years in an edible state. Originally, canned food was stored in heavy glass jars. These presented a problem when it comes to transportation so eventually they were replaced with tin canisters (shortened to cans) which are easier and cheaper to made and far less fragile. Can openers were not invented until 30 years later, meaning soldiers had to open them with bayonets or by smashing them with rocks.
