Butterfly valves are a quarter turn valve that isolates or regulates the flow of liquid. It is operated by a disk that rotates in a similar fashion to a ball valve, though butterfly valve are generally favoured as they are more cost effective and light weight, ending less support. A rod is passed through a disc that is situated in the middle of the valve. The rod is then attached to an actuator on the outside of the valve. The actuator is turned, rendering the disc perpendicular or parallel to the flow. Unlike a ball valve, the disk within a butterfly valve is always present in the flow, so can indicate any faults or pressure drops.
