In a vessel such as a submarine or ship, where space is limited, beds are often bunked, whereby one bed is situated on top of anther. Most of the beds are made with metal frames, have a thin mattress and are issued with a pillow and thin duvet. Personnel are expected to keep these clean and tidy as they are inspected regularly. Military personnel can also be issued with a cot - a ben made from a canvas base, suspended between metal poles. These are often temporary and collapsable, meaning troops on exercise can take them with them.
