Bullet proof materials are designed to make an item capable of stopping a bullet or similar high velocity projectiles, such as shrapnel. The term bullet resistance is often preferred because few, if any, materials provide complete protection against all types of bullets as well as multiple hits in the same direction. Body armour that is bulletproof has been in use since about 1984. Law enforcement began to wear it and saw a dramatic drop in deaths, with over 3,000 lives being saved due to the armour. Bullet-resistant materials are usually rigid, but may also be supple. Some materials are complex, such as kevlar or may be simple such as steel.
