Building glass, or architectural glass, is used as a building material. It is used mostly as windows and external walls. It can also be used internally as an architectural feature. When used in buildings, glass is often safety glass whereby it is reinforced, toughened and laminated glass. There are many, many types of glass and ways that it can be created that have been developed over the years. Many companies that have a large area of glass on the outside of the building use self-cleaning glass. The exterior of the glass is coated with titanium dioxide which leads to a photo-catalytic effect whereby ultra-violet rays break down organic compounds on the surface of the glass and a hydrophilic effect causes water to be drawn to the surface of the glass. The organic compound then washes away.
