Biofilters are a pollution control technique that uses a bioreactor containing living material or capture and biologically degrade pollutants. Some common uses of this are processing wastewater, capturing chemicals and decontaminants in the air. Essentially, a biofilter is a bed of media on which microorganisms attach and grow to form biofilm. The biofilm is formed by a community of different microorganisms and usually appears slimy and muddy. Organic matter and water components spread onto the biofilm and treatment occurs by biodegradation.
