Ballistic glass, otherwise known as bulletproof glass, is a type of strong yet transparent material that is resistant to penetration when struck. It is not completely impenetrable, as is no material. It is constructed from two types of glass, one hard and one soft. The soft layer gives the glass more elasticity, meaning it can flex instead of shatter. The refraction index for both layers of glass must be the same to ensure the pane remains transparent. Ballistic glass varies in thickness and can be from 3/4 to 3 1/2 inches depending on the application it will be used for. Bulletproof glass is used consistently for the military as well as in windows of buildings that require an extra level of security.
