Auto service centres are garages or specialist areas a vehicle can be taken for repair or maintenance. Service centres can be built for a variety of different vehicles, from cars through to aircraft. Mechanics and technicians can repair or maintain a vehicle to ensure that it is functioning to its full potential within the strict guidelines as set down by that particular vehicle. Cars, vans and lorries, for example, undergo an MOT Test (Ministry of transport) to ensure the vehicle is still running to specification. An MOT is only required after a vehicle has been in operation for 3 years, and they are to be carried out annually. Services are also worthwhile to ensure that oil, plugs and lights are still working well, though these are not compulsory. Other things are to be done at the drivers discretion, for example regularly check that tyres are still legal, that the engine oil is topped up and that water tanks are full.
