Atmospheric LiDAR are instruments that use laser light to study atmospheric properties from the ground to the top layers of the atmosphere. Such instruments have been used to study atmospheric gases, aerosols, clouds and temperature amongst other things. The basic concepts to study the atmosphere using lift were developed before World War II. Searchlight beams were used to study cloud altitude using both scanning and pulsed light. Advanced techniques to study cloud properties using scattered light with different wavelengths were also used.
