Aluminium is remarkable for its low density and its ability to resist corrosion through passivation. Due to this, aluminium and its alloys are vital to the space industry and the construction industry.

Aluminium / Bauxite - Aluminium (or Aluminum in the US) is a light-weight, ductile, silver-white metal that is highly reactive, and therefore rarely found in its pure form. However, it is also resistant to corrosion due to a protective layer of aluminium oxide, which forms on its surface. Aluminium is commonly used in the form of an alloy (a mixture with aluminium and other elements), for applications ranging from aircraft and vehicle parts to cans, packaging, food containers and cooking equipment.

Bauxite is the most common form of aluminium ore. It is a rock made from clay-rich laterite soils from which silica has leached away, formed from weathered igneous rocks, particularly in tropical and subtropical environments. The largest processor of bauxite is Australia, but it is also common in the West Indies, Africa and South America, while smaller deposits can also be found in Europe. Bauxite typically contains a combination of aluminium oxides and hydroxides along with other materials including clay, quartz, magnetite, hematite and siderite.
