Airport gate management systems offer the safe and organised movement of passengers to and from gates within the airport terminals. The process begins in the terminal. There are several large boards listing flights departing in the coming hours. A gate is announced on the board at a pre-mentioned time. Passengers are then advised to make their way to the gate in good time, gates being clearly sign posted to direct passengers quickly and securely. Airline staff are positioned at the gate where passengers are divided into two groups, regular boarding and priority boarding. Airline staff then check passports and scan the barcode on airline tickets using a bio-metric scanner, before allowing passengers through to queue.

Airport staff are often stationed at the gate, ready to open doors and direct passengers onto the plane safely, avoiding walking under the wings, or onto a terminal bus that will take passengers across the runway to a plane stationed some distance from the airport. Airport staff are usually dressed in the correct PPE, this being airport uniform and a hi-vis jacket to keep them clearly visible and safe. Airline staff then assist passengers onto the plane and safely into their seats, baggage stowed, and ready to set off towards their destination.
