Airport engineering is the design, construction, operation and maintenance of facilities that provide the landing and take off, loading and unloading, servicing and storage of aircraft. There are several considerations to the selection of a site for a new build airport. These include how close they are to existing roads, how close they are to residential areas, any demolitions that may need to take place, or how much damage they will do to the environment. Runway lengths vary depending on the type and number of aircraft that will be using them. This is often the first thing taken into account when deciding on where to build an airport. A number of service roads must also be placed around the runways to allow for ground support to carry out their day to day duties.
The building of the terminal and the number of terminals built also depends on the expected amount of traffic travelling through the airport on a day to day basis. The larger the number the bigger the building needs to be, especially if multiple flights will be taking off at the same time. There are a number of support buildings needed, including places to house fight kitchens, where meals will be prepared for passengers and staff, and buildings for the ground support staff to store their equipment and many vehicles that are required, such as baggage trucks, busses, docking stations and walkways. Refuelling and deicing buildings also need to be erected a safe distance from aircraft and usually above ground These are usually in a remote location and above ground.
