Air starters are used to power the initial start up of a large diesel or gas turbine. When starting the engine, compressed air is administered to a dead-centre piston, forcing it to move downwards. As the engine starts to turn the air start valve to the next cylinder opens and the rotation continues. After several rotations fuel is injected, the air is cut off and the engine begins to run. Larger engines are completely blown through with air before the start-up sequence begins to ensure it is completely free of any debris that may cause damage.
