The Ostase® BAP EIA Enzymeimmunoassay

Immunodiagnostic Systems

BAP is also known as skeletal alkaline phosphatase or bone ALP. The Ostase® BAP EIA is intended to be used as an aid in the management of postmenopausal osteoporosisand Pagets disease. It has also been shown to be useful in patients undergoing therapy for metabolic bone disease.

The Ostase® BAP EIABone turnover is an ongoing dynamic process of bone resorption and bone formation. Bone resorption results from actions of bone cells called osteoclasts dissolving bone and digesting type I collagen, while bone formation results from actions of bone cells called osteoblasts to form new bone.

Normally, these processes are balanced, or "coupled". However, as we age or as one is affected by various metabolic conditions or diseases, bone turnover may become “uncoupled", i.e. bone resorption and bone formation may proceed at different rates. Uncoupling of bone turnover may result in excessive bone loss or in excessive bone formation. Regardless of the circumstances, Ostase® BAP is indicated for assessing bone turnover dynamics.
