Outlast Technologies, Inc., a privately held U.S. corporation, headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, is the worldwide pioneer in developing, design and marketing of phase-change materials and applications.
The company was founded in 1990, and since 1991 Outlast Technologies owns exclusive rights for the licensing of the technology. Outlast develops and distributes products adapting temperatures dynamically to individual needs and surroundings. As an innovative technology company, Outlast has launched temperature-regulating technology in apparel, footwear, bedding and accessories. Based in Heidenheim, Germany, the company is responsible for the European market.
Climate Control Clothing
Outlast is offering climate control clothing, apparel, footwear, bedding and accessories. Our technologies are perfect for military operations that may expose soilders or personnel to extreme weather coniditions.
You can find temperature regulating Outlast® materials for example in antiballistic vests, in combat uniforms, in protective suits, in helmets, in military boots, in socks, in underwear…
Outlast Technology / Thermocules
Originally developed for NASA, Outlast® products contain ThermoculesTM, which store, absorb and release excess body heat, providing increased comfort. Benefits of the Outlast® technology which improves the performance of military people wearing personal protection products:
- Less sweat
- Less chill
- Less overheating
- Active temperature regulation
- More comfort
- Better performance
Outlast® materials absorb excess body heat when too much is created and release it again to the body when needed. Welcomed “side effect”: Sweating is reduced dramatically, temperature is balanced actively and dynamically. Outlast® products reduce overheating and shivering, the warmth is distributed regularly. Comfort is increased significantly. All day and night, the applications are many-facetted, you can include the Outlast® technology in underwear, ballistic vests, CBRN suits, combat suits, parachute jumper suits, boots, socks, insoles, ballistic car seats…
Thanks to Outlast® military PCM (phase change materials) the body adjusts better to outer temperature influences. Comfort is highly increased even in stressful situations. Outlast® apparel and shoes provide more comfort in all seasons. Going from indoors to outdoors: Outlast® products allow you to stay comfortable and reduce peaks of being too hot or too cold.
A study by Eidgenössischen Materialprüfungs- und Forschungsanstalt (EMPA), St. Gallen/Switzerland, discovered, that sweat production in apparel can be reduced up to a third. Outlast® footwear can reduce sweating by almost half. Everyone knows that you generate heat when active, and when you stop you cool down. With Outlast® it is different, you feel comfortable all around.
Temperature Regulating Clothing
Physiological tests demonstrate that Outlast® materials outperform traditional materials making our temperature regulating clothing very effective. Further technical evidence that the dynamic thermal properties of Outlast® products are grounded in solid science can be found in a new test procedure. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) approved the standard test procedure to measure the amount of latent energy in textile materials. Based on years of research and testing textiles containing “phase change materials” (PCMs) by Outlast Technologies, Inc., and Prof. Dr. Douglas Hittle, Director Solar Energy Applications at Colorado State University, the first “Test Method for Steady State and Dynamic Thermal Performance in Textile Materials” (ASTM D7024) was established by the ASTM in June 2004.
It is possible to measure the ammount of latent energy in textiles. Founded in 1898, ASTM International, is one of the largest standards development organizations in the world – a trusted source for technical standards for materials, products, systems, and services.
From an industry perspective, the ASTM standard clearly demonstrates and displays the benefits of incorporating thermal dynamic properties (DTP) into fibers, fabrics and foams, which is also important regarding the specifications at tenders.
