Caterpillar Military Engines
Caterpillar engines meet the stringent durability and reliability standards demanded by the highly competitive commercial market. Thanks to their Advanced Combustion Emissions Reduction Technology (ACERT), Caterpillar engines comply with the most stringent on and off-road emissions legislation - both today's and those anticipated in the future.
Military users can benefit from the latest Caterpillar technology - developed in the commercial sector - including electronic unit injection and turbo charging with air-to-air aftercooling.
The Caterpillar C Series, which was developed for the highly competitive and demanding US truck market, is perfectly suited both for heavy logistic vehicles and light armoured tracked and wheeled fighting vehicles. The engines range in power from 250 to 600 kW.
Caterpillar C-9 Military Vehicle Diesel Engine
The new C-9 engine, developed for the commercial truck market, provides 300kW of emissions legislation compliant power and can drive the Piranha III light armoured vehicle. A variant of the Piranha III has been chosen by the US Army for its most deployable armoured formations.
Caterpillar C-12 Military Vehicle Diesel Engine
The C-12 engine, rated at up to 321kW, is already in service with a large part of the US Army's truck fleet and powers the Oshkosh Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement, now in service with the US Marine Corps and currently being considered by a number of other armies around the world. It has the best payload-to- weight (980kg) ratio in the industry and a 1.4million km B-50 life-to-overhaul.
Caterpillar C-18 Military Vehicle Diesel Engine
The powerful new C-18 engine, rated at 560kW, has been chosen by BAE Systems for the new Terrier combat engineer vehicle for the British Army. It has also been chosen by Oshkosh for its new heavy equipment transporter to meet a British Army requirement.
Perkins CV12 Military Vehicle Diesel Engine
The CV12, rated at up to 1200kW is manufactured at our factory in Shrewsbury and is a turbocharged, air- to-air charge cooled, 12 cylinder vee diesel engine. Its outstanding design and specification features ensure reliability, durability and an exceptional power to weight ratio. These engines are easy to maintain, repair and overhaul and provide an excellent overall performance.
The CV series includes direct injection, water-cooling and four-stroke compression ignition. The engine's compact dimensions and low weight has been achieved by carefully applying commercial design and construction without using specialised materials. Cast iron ensures the engine's ruggedness and rigidity, keeping any strategic material content to a minimum.
CV 12 diesel engines have a wide range of applications. They can be used in heavy and medium main battle tanks, self-propelled guns, trailer mounted generator sets and marine propulsion units. This is why the versatile CV 12 engines have been chosen for the British Army's Challenger 2 MBT and the Czech Army's modernised T-72 MBT.
The CV12 powered the British Army's Challenger and Challenger 2 tanks during operations in Kuwait and Iraq in 1991 and 2003, achieving remarkable levels of reliability in even the most difficult combat conditions.
