Stansted Airport Visitor Centre Gets Go-Ahead

The 1,500sqft facility, which offers stunning views across the airfield and a high tech lecture theatre, will act as an education resource for displays and activities for visiting school trips and community groups.

Located on the northside of the airfield and near the airport’s long stay car park, entrance to the centre will be provided by a new access road along with a bus service connecting visitors to the main airport, and provision for cycle parking.

Ajay Sood, project designer at 3DReid, explains some of the design features: “The building is trapezoidal in form, with the viewing area splaying out towards the airfield in order to maximise views of the runway. The zinc standing seam cladding overhangs the viewing area to reduce potential glare, which is further reduced by the use of clear solar control glass.”

He continued: “Where possible we have sought to keep the environmental impact to a minimum. Some of the sustainable development principles we have adopted include natural ventilation, with openable windows to increase airflow across internal spaces; the maximisation of natural daylight; low energy light fittings; and construction materials, such as the zinc cladding, which can be easily recycled. Lime render is also to be used on the facades, and where possible, construction materials will be locally sourced ”

Nick Barton, BAA's Strategy & Solutions Director, said: “We are extremely impressed with 3DReid’s innovative and very futuristic design for the visitors centre – it’ll certainly blend in with Stansted’s other iconic structures, like the terminal building.”

“Stansted Airport is an integral part of the community and the centre will be an important place for local people and aviation enthusiasts to meet. What could be better to help to improve knowledge and understanding of the airport and aviation in general.”
